Strawberry nails from Dainty Squid:

1. Paint your base coat (red/pink)

2. Use pinking shears (or a super steady hand) to cut strips of tape, and apply them to the larger part of your nail (the part where the green with NOT be)

3. Paint the area of your nail without tape green, and remove the tape within a few moments

4. Use a toothpick (or a DIY dotting tool), make small black dots on the red sections.

5. Let dry and finish with a top coat

I made a tutorial! I hope this is something that possibly helps people, because I know some people said they wanted to try out my stippling gradient nails.

Okay, so words to go with the pictures:

First you need to paint your nails with which ever color you like. In my original nails I chose a black base, but I like white much better. Then, using a tiny dotting tool (or a needle, possibly a toothpick, I used a #18/0 spotter brush) make a bunch of dots near the tip of your nail, so many that barely any of the base color shows through. You can use nail polish for this, but I chose to use acrylic paint. After that keep working in sections, using less and less dots and making the sections ever so slightly bigger until you reach your cuticle. If you have long nails you could probably stop before the cuticle, or you could just make the sections bigger. I like to do four sections, but you could do more or less depending on how gradual you want the gradient.

If there’s any confusion please let me know and I’ll try to clarify!

Fishtail Nail Tutorial!
  1. Paint the nail with a light coloured polish.
  2. Use a striping brush to map out the fishtail with an opaque polish. Use light strokes starting from the top free edge of the nail to the opposite side on a diagonal. Repeat this process, alternating direction, to the cuticle.
  3. Use a contrasting opaque polish to fill in one of the sections. From there, fill in the very next section that doesn’t touch the first filled-in section. Repeat this down the nail and see the photo if you need clarification. You can use a nail art brush for this but I just used the brush from the polish. It doesn’t have to be super neat because you’ll thicken up the outlines in the next step.
  4. Go over all of the lines you mapped out with your striping brush, making all of them equally thick.
  5. Use the same polish to fill in certain section like you did in Step 3.
  6. In the sections that still have the base colour showing through create thin diagonal lines down the middle, parallel to the direction of the section.
  7. Create small diagonal lines on each side of the line from Step 6 for a leaf-life pattern.
